About

I’m Gopal. I started The Free Investor blog to share my investment ideas, philosophy, analysis, and tools etc that I hope other investors can use profitably. I know there are already so many websites and blogs dedicated to investing. However, most of those sites are financial and macro news oriented, narrowly focused on a specific style, short-term focused, and/or have their own agenda which are not always aligned with their reader/investor’s goals. My goal is to help my readers become better informed and confident self-directed investors by learning from my successes and mistakes.

I have been a passionate self-directed small investor, primarily in US stocks, since 2005. Right from the beginning, the focus of my analysis has been – Long term superior returns. (By long-term, I mean at least 3-5 years). I don’t confine myself to any single style (e.g., value, growth), market capitalization (e.g., small cap, medium cap etc) or sector etc. I guess, that explains the name of my blog: “The Free Investor“. However, I mostly invest within my circle of competencies, i.e., I invest in businesses that I understand. In addition to my own stock screens, I subscribe to a few investment newsletters to get stock ideas. I do my own analysis and valuation before investing in a stock.

I am an engineer, MBA (Finance & Accounting) from New York University Stern School of Business and CFA Level 2 candidate. Please don’t hold any of that against me 😉
